As a family photographer in Nottingham, one of my favourite places for relaxed, outdoor family photos is Sherwood Pines. This spring, I joined Hannah, Andrew, and their one-year-old daughter Olive for a joy-filled shoot to celebrate her first birthday — complete with forest walks, giggles, and a very fun “ONE” balloon.
There’s something timeless about photographing families in the forest — the soft light through the trees, the space to roam, and the kind of calm that only nature can offer. It was the perfect setting for capturing the joy and chaos of this stage of life, surrounded by fresh air and towering pine trees.
Whether you’re planning your own shoot or just wondering whether family photos are worth it (spoiler: they really are), here’s everything you need to know.
Why Choose a Family Photographer in Nottingham?
These photos aren’t about being picture-perfect or getting the dream shot for Instagram. They’re about you — your little moments, the chaos, the cuddles, the snack breaks. The real stuff.
Because let’s be honest — there’s never a ‘perfect’ time. No ideal age, no magical season where everything’s suddenly calm and coordinated. And that’s kind of the beauty of it.
So show up as you are, with grass stains, giggles, and all. I’ll be right there with you, capturing it all as it unfolds.
How My Family Shoots Work
Each session lasts around 45 minutes to an hour — long enough to settle in and capture genuine connection, without anyone (big or little!) getting overwhelmed.
We’ll gently explore the woodland together — stopping to play, cuddle, snack, and soak up the scenery. You don’t need to prepare poses or worry about what your toddler might do. I’ll guide you gently when needed, but mostly, I’m just there to capture the real stuff: the snuggles, the giggles, the muddy knees.
For Hannah, Andrew, and Olive, we brought along a fun birthday balloon (a big shiny “ONE”) which Olive loved — and it made for such playful, lighthearted images. That’s the kind of simple prop that can work really well if you’re celebrating a milestone.
What to Wear for a Forest Family Photoshoot
The most important thing? That you all feel like yourselves. No need for anything formal or super coordinated — but here are a few tips that work beautifully in natural, outdoor settings like Sherwood Pines:
- Earthy and neutral tones always photograph well — soft greens, browns, navy, mustard, cream.
- Avoid pure white tops, bold stripes, or checks — and try to skip black on the top half.
- Florals and subtle patterns? Yes please — just keep the whole look gentle and complementary.
- Layering is great in spring — and if it’s chilly, bring outerwear you’d be happy to be photographed in.
- Footwear: Think practical and photogenic — boots, trainers or wellies are ideal.
Hannah, Andrew and Olive’s outfits were a dream — coordinated without being too matchy, and full of texture and warm tones that blended perfectly with the forest.
What to Bring (and What to Leave at Home)
You don’t need to carry much — I’ll have a tote ready for any essentials you want to keep close. Please bring your buggy though if you’re happy to park it nearby whilst we shoot! Here’s a suggested list:
- A drink and some snacks
- Wipes or tissues
- A spare outfit for little ones (in case of tumbles!)
- A comfort item or toy if needed
- Hairbrush or lip balm
A Quick Note on Hair & Make-Up
Come as you are! Some parents like a quick top-up before we start — maybe a brush through your hair or a dab of lip balm. If you want to wear make-up, a little more than usual can help your features pop on camera. And if shine is a concern, a light powder can help with reflections.
But ultimately — I’ll be photographing you in the softest, most flattering light the forest can offer. You don’t have to do anything extra for that warmth to shine through.
