If you’re planning a wedding at The River Mill in Derby, you’ll find tonnes of inspiration from this styled shoot. A talented team created a beautiful Spring theme for the day and it was a joy to photograph.
Why The River Mill is a great place to get married
On the riverbank of the Derwent, close to the city of Derby, is where you’ll find this little slice of country paradise. Designed for those who adore a quirky rustic aesthetic, the venue extends itself as a blank canvas for creative couples to decorate as desired. You’ll have plenty to work with between the vaulted ceilings, rich exposed brick, and cast iron. From minimalist to vintage themes, the historic property can handle them all. What’s more, the grounds offer outdoor space to indulge in a drink by the riverside. Overall, the venue can host 120 standing guests and 70 for a seated affair, with the option for a ceremony onsite.
An incredible amount of daylight floods in through the skylights (a photographer’s dream), making the space feel spacious and modern. The resin floor teamed with wooden panelling and the historical industrial features of the original mill building make for a cool, understated look with big impact.
The surrounding area makes for gorgeous wedding photographs walking across the cobbles, on the bridge and against the backdrop of the heritage mills. I photograph at The West Mill often, so it’s awesome to have another sister venue next-door.
Spring themed Wedding Styling
Tara Knott made the styled the most beautiful Spring theme arrangement for the photoshoot, alongside Nadia Di Tullio on the florals. You’ll see soft blues against fuchsia poppies, spring bulbs spilling out over minimal ceramics… Total eye candy!
The ‘Drunk in Love’ neon signage above the top table adds a cool edge, with candles adorning the trestle tables for a cosy glow.
Advice for planning your wedding at The River Mill
The River Mill gives you iconic 19th-century architecture effortlessly balanced by the natural beauty of its riverside location. So I suggest you fully embrace the vibe of the venue. You could adorn it with decor that works with the industrial aesthetic (modern colour pops or muted earthy tones), or keep it super minimal and let candlelight do it’s magic.
Always leave time for golden hour portraits before sunset, it’s a welcome break for you both to have time alone strolling across the bridge and to the riverside (I know the best spot for this), capturing the heritage mill site in all it’s glory behind you!
